The solution involves adding advanced radar sensors to off-shore turbines to eliminate blind spots. Off-shore wind farms (or turbine arrays) interfere with both military and civil radar systems and this interference is currently being investigated by the Defence Secretary, the Secretary of State and the Transport Secretary.

A Cambridge business with a big idea for tackling climate change has won a £20,000 Shell Springboard award. Polysolar received the award for its window-fitted solar panel, a transparent glazing that can transform sunlight into electricity, which could have important consequences for the environment and housing in the UK.

The company believes there is no need to install solar panels when you can use your windows to create climate-friendly electricity. The glazing uses low-cost organic photovoltaic materials that can replace standard windows, saving developers the labour costs of installing separate solar panels. Currently more than half of the cost of fitting solar panels is labour.

Phillip Sargent, Polysolar cto said: “Shell Springboard’s validation of our idea means a great deal to us in our search for funding. This endorsement really gives us a greater presence and credibility.”

Andrew Eddy, Shell UK director said: “Architectural photovoltaic glass not only has huge commercial potential but could have a significant impact on the UK’s carbon emissions.
“This kind of cutting-edge, grassroots innovation from within the small business community will play a critical role in tackling the global challenge of climate change.”
