at 6:45pm on Thursday 1 May 2008 at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.

This year’s speaker is Jayne-Anne Gadhia, CEO of Virgin Money.

The subject is:- The Northern Rock Story

Ms Gadhia was voted one of the most powerful women in the financial world. Before taking the CEO post of Virgin’s financial services arm, Gadhia worked as managing director in Royal Bank of Scotland’s £70bn mortgage business. Virgin Money was the favored bidder for the Northern Rock bank and announced in its official submission to the government that, if successful, they would have merged the Northern Rock and Virgin Money, naming the new company Virgin Bank with Gadhia becoming CEO. Stefan, Daniel, Philip and Felix have worked very hard since October 2007, winning through the preliminary stages up to December. 232 university teams competed in 29 heats of 8 teams.

The four German final year students studying at Anglia Ruskin’s Ashcroft International Business School in Cambridge then won their semi-final at the Royal Navy Museum at Portsmouth in January 2008.

Anglia Ruskin University has been very successful over the years in the IBM UBC. Its teams reached the semi-finals four years running, and in 2006 the ARU team was 2nd only to Manchester Business School in the UBC finals.

Cambridge firm answers Government problem

March 5, 2008 by cambridgearea

Cambridge Consultants is offering a new and low-cost technical solution to the conflict of interest facing the Government, surrounding its deployment of wind farms to meet renewable energy targets in the vicinity of sensitive UK MoD radar installations, which ensure the country’s ongoing security.

The solution involves adding advanced radar sensors to off-shore turbines to eliminate blind spots. Off-shore wind farms (or turbine arrays) interfere with both military and civil radar systems and this interference is currently being investigated by the Defence Secretary, the Secretary of State and the Transport Secretary.

An award winner for lowering cost

March 5, 2008 by cambridgearea

A Cambridge business with a big idea for tackling climate change has won a £20,000 Shell Springboard award. Polysolar received the award for its window-fitted solar panel, a transparent glazing that can transform sunlight into electricity, which could have important consequences for the environment and housing in the UK.

The company believes there is no need to install solar panels when you can use your windows to create climate-friendly electricity. The glazing uses low-cost organic photovoltaic materials that can replace standard windows, saving developers the labour costs of installing separate solar panels. Currently more than half of the cost of fitting solar panels is labour.

Phillip Sargent, Polysolar cto said: “Shell Springboard’s validation of our idea means a great deal to us in our search for funding. This endorsement really gives us a greater presence and credibility.”

Andrew Eddy, Shell UK director said: “Architectural photovoltaic glass not only has huge commercial potential but could have a significant impact on the UK’s carbon emissions.
“This kind of cutting-edge, grassroots innovation from within the small business community will play a critical role in tackling the global challenge of climate change.”

Businesses are paying the price of red tape

February 26, 2008 by cambridgearea

Red tape is cumulatively costing businesses in the region £6.9 billion, up from £5.8bn 12 months ago. The finding comes from the latest edition of the British Chambers of Commerce Burdens Barometer. Overall, the cost of regulation on businesses in the UK has risen during the past decade to £65.99bn. “On a more positive note, for the first time there are three regulations in this year’s barometer which actually produce an annual saving for business,” said John Bridge, ceo of Cambs Chambers of Commerce. “Unfortunately, they are too few and far between.”

Nokia and University of Cambridge launch the Morph - a nanotechnology concept device

February 26, 2008 by cambridgearea

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes.  It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: “We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials.”
